The Journey Through Time campaign is presented by The Macallan (“Presenter”) and organised by Time Out Hong Kong (“Organiser”).
The campaign will roll out from July 31, 2024, to October 29, 2024, and it will include different competition phases covering the recruitment period, online application, screening of entries, semi-finals, Creative Collective workshop, bar promotion, and live competition, which will be judged by a panel of experts.
The inaugural Journey Through Time campaign will run from July 31, 2024, to October 29, 2024.
- Aspiring candidates for the Journey Through Time talent showcase must complete an online entry form (the “Online Entry”) between July 31, 2024, and August 26, 2024. Participants are required to submit two cocktail recipes along with the Online Entry Application.
- Entries will undergo preliminary screening and scoring based on a set of judging criteria before advancing to the semi-finals. On September 10, 2024, the twenty (20) semi-finalists who have been selected will be announced. This will be followed by a photo-taking session with the semi-finalists from September 11, 2024 to September 13, 2024.
- The twenty (20) semi-finalists will be invited to attend the Creative Collective workshop (the “Workshop”) on September 17, 2024, for a briefing session in regard to the semi-final round and to gain insights from The Macallan brand ambassador and expert panels. During the Workshop, participants will also have the opportunity to receive feedback on how to improve their cocktail recipes.
- After the Workshop, each participant will showcase their crafted cocktails in their respective bars for a month from September 18, 2024 to October 17, 2024 (the “Promotion Period”), promoting them to patrons and their respective bar's official social media accounts.
- During the Promotion Period, the Journey Through Time judges will visit the bars to observe, sample, and evaluate the presented cocktails.
- The names of the top five (5) participants who will be promoted to the final round will be announced on October 21, 2024.
- In the final round, the top five participants will go head-to-head and present a new cocktail creation to the judging panel on October 29, 2024.
- The winner will be revealed on the day of the final round, and the winner will be crowned the inaugural champion of the Journey Through Time 2024 talent showcase.
- Journey Through Time talent showcase is open to mixologists of all skill levels, from juniors to seniors and those in management roles.
- Participants must be at least 18 years old, of legal drinking age or older, and actively working full-time as professional bartenders in an establishment in Hong Kong or Macau.
- Participants must be a Hong Kong or Macau resident, either a permanent citizen or visa holder.
- Award-winning bartenders from local or international cocktail competitions are welcome to participate.
- Participants must adhere to the Rules and Regulations.
- Each bar can only submit one entry. If multiple submissions from the same establishment are made, only the first entry will be considered. Subsequent entry(ies) will not be considered. It is the responsibility of each bar to select a single candidate to represent their establishment.
- Individuals who are deemed ineligible to participate in the Journey Through Time talent showcase include any person serving as an officer, director, employee, agent, or representative of Edrington Hong Kong Limited, the owner of The Macallan, or Time Out Hong Kong, the “Organiser” of Journey Through Time campaign. This restriction extends to immediate family members (defined as parents, siblings, children, and/or spouses, regardless of residence) as well as individuals domiciled with, whether related or not, any aforementioned officer, director, employee, agent, or representative.
- Bars affiliated with any judge on the panel are eligible to enter. Judges with a conflict of interest, whether through ownership or employment with a nominee, are required to declare such conflicts and recuse themselves from scoring that participant. In such cases, the participant's score will be determined by the remaining judges.
How to Enter
For the online entry, which relates to the theme "Past" and “Present”, cocktail recipes must contain a minimum of 30 ml of The Macallan Double Cask 12 Years Old. Participants may use any ingredients, mixers, and liqueurs, but are prohibited to use any other whisky apart from The Macallan’s.
Participants have full creative control over the cocktail-making process, including choosing the method, ice type, serving style, and glassware.
When selecting ingredients, there are no restrictions on the amount as long as they contribute to the storytelling of the cocktail inspiration. Participants are required to limit homemade concoctions/bespoke cocktail mix to two and ensure they are easy to recreate. While the garnish and decorations are not counted as homemade, participants must ensure they complement the narrative of the cocktail entries.
Along with the cocktail recipe, participants must submit up to two pictures of the final product (up to 10mb per photo).
Participants have the option to submit a 1-minute video showcasing their cocktail creation instead of pictures. Video should not exceed more than 1 minute. The video should demonstrate the step-by-step process. However, the scoring criteria will remain the same, whether the participant submits images or a video. Videos must be uploaded to YouTube and marked as Unlisted. This means that the video will not be visible to the public; only those with the link can view and share it. The video should not be visible in the Videos tab or search results of the participant's YouTube channel; otherwise, the entry will be denied.
Participants must also include a written story (maximum 250 words) detailing the narrative and inspiration behind their cocktail. This will provide insight into the creative process and enhance the submission. The description must be submitted in English language, as it will be presented to a regional judging panel.
Participants must complete the entry form, including the cocktail recipe, name, ingredients, measurements, servings, preparation time, and step-by-step instructions.
The participant's cocktail recipe submission must meet several criteria: It should not have been previously awarded or used in other competitions. The drink's name must not include any inappropriate language, such as vulgar or explicit terms, as determined by the “Presenter” and “Organiser” at their discretion. The recipe should be original and not infringe upon the intellectual property rights of any third party. It must not violate the rights of any third parties, including intellectual property. Additionally, the content of the recipes, names, and descriptions should be positive and in line with The Macallan brand values, anything offensive, defamatory, discriminatory, or inappropriate for promotional use should be avoided.
The participant must personally submit each entry. Participants are limited to one entry per person and each participant should use only one email address for the competition. If multiple entries are submitted against these Official Competition Rules, they will be disqualified.
Once participants complete the entry form and click “SUBMIT,” they will be officially entered into the Journey Through Time talent showcase. Participants who wish to join but need help in completing their entry may email the “Organiser” at info@journeythroughtimehk.com.
Participants will receive a confirmation email from info@journeythroughtimehk.com with the subject line “The Macallan presents: Journey Through Time 2024 submission has been received” on the same day. If participants do not receive this email, it indicates that the entry was not successfully submitted, and participants should resubmit their entry.
- In order to participate in the Journey Through Time talent showcase, participants are required to successfully complete the Online Entry Application. The entry phase will be closed precisely at 11:59 p.m. HKT on September 2, 2024. Participants who miss the deadline will not be permitted to enter.

Participants must submit two cocktail recipes that reflect the embodiment of The Macallan legacy: the “Past” and “Present”.
- Participants are required to craft and submit a cocktail recipe inspired by The Macallan's illustrious history, incorporating six key elements that shape its renowned character: the iconic The Macallan Estate; the distinctive Curiously Small Stills; the craftsmanship of Exceptional Oak Casks infusing unique aromas and flavours; Sherry Seasoning of oak casks in Jerez De La Frontera, Spain; the whiskies spectrum of Natural Colours from light gold to darkest mahogany; and the distillery's unwavering commitment to Mastery, encapsulating two centuries of excellence.
- Participants are required to craft and submit a cocktail recipe that pays homage to The Macallan’s 200-year legacy, showcasing its current status as a symbol of craftsmanship. The recipe and story of the cocktail must reflect the creativity of the ‘present’ and draw inspiration from Hong Kong or Macau’s diverse cultural heritage to honour The Macallan’s rich tradition and unique influence, utilising its whisky’s rich, honey-spiced oak flavours as the perfect foundation for the cocktail.
- Entries submitted will be evaluated by the Presenter, the Organizer, and the judging panel between August 26, 2024 to September 9, 2024. Entries that do not comply with the guidelines will be considered ineligible, and the participant will be disqualified.

- On September 10, the twenty (20) semi-finalists will be notified about the selection via email or WhatsApp message via the telephone number provided by the participant at the time of entry. Only the semi-finalists advancing to the next phase of the campaign will be contacted by the “Organiser”. Announcements of the selection will be posted on the Journey Through Time website and social media accounts, as well as on the Time Out Hong Kong website and social media accounts.
- The decisions of the judges are final and binding on all matters related to the Competition.
- The “Organiser” will contact the semi-finalists to arrange for an exclusive photo shooting for their profile pictures and creations, to be held from September 11 to 13 2024.
- The purpose of the photoshoot is to provide materials for the promotion on the "Organiser's" website and social media, as well as for the one-month promotion of the semi-finalists at their respective bars. Semi-finalists are also required to communicate with the "Organiser" for the provision of the logo of their bar for the collaterals. The Organiser will produce all collaterals needed for online promotion for the bars and send them to the semi-finalists.
- Participants selected as semi-finalists are required to participate in the semi-final phase. If a participant is unable to participate in the semi-final phase for any reason, they will be disqualified and lose their entry. The participant with the next highest score may be selected as one of the twenty (20) semi-finalists.
- Participants qualifying for the semi-finals will receive notification about their selection via email or WhatsApp message via the telephone number provided by the participant at the time of entry. They will also receive detailed information regarding the upcoming Creative Collective workshop, and all the requirements for the next round.
- Semi-finalists are required to attend the Creative Collective workshop on September 17, 2024. If a participant is unable to participate in the workshop, they must inform the "Organiser". No points will be deducted for those who do not attend, however, these bartenders will miss the opportunity to connect with the judges for feedback.
- During the period of September 18, 2024, to October 17, 2024, the twenty (20) semi-finalists will showcase the two cocktails they have created for their entries in their respective bars for a month, promoting them to patrons and the bar's official social media accounts.
- Judges will visit all twenty bars from September 20, 2024, to October 11, 2024, to taste and score each bar's creation and making of the cocktail based on a set of criteria for the semi-finals. This evaluation will consider how well the concept is presented on-premise, how effectively the story of The Macallan's "Past" and "Present" is communicated through the bar experience, and how it is promoted to patrons and on the bar's official social media accounts. The schedule of visits is tentative and will be announced in advance via email or WhatsApp message via the telephone number provided by the participant at the time of entry, allowing mixologists to prepare for the bar visits.
- The top five (5) finalists will be announced on the Journey Through Time official website and social media on October 21, 2024.
